After camping a week with our 12 1/2-year-old black lab, we had to send Sydney to doggie heaven this morning due to cancer. RIP.
2/2/2000 – 7/23/2012 (87 in dog years!) She had a great active life.
Sydney was my rescue dog from the Portland Humane Society that rescued me from a tough break up and helped me to move to Newport Beach, California (where we met Chris), El Segundo/LA, Philadelphia and then she retired in La Jolla, San Diego. She was named “Sydney” when I adopted her during the Sydney Olympics as she didn’t know her name (Jezebel).
She was always a friend that would run with me every day for over an hour and loved chasing the tennis ball.
In memory of all the pooches that get us to walk, run and play, I’ve posted Sydney’s favorite active spots:
#1 Huntington Dog Beach – After four years Sydney finally learned how to fetch the tennis ball with my good friend Lee Beard.
#2 Del Mar Dog Beach – where the turf meets the surf. Sid loved to be leash-free but in the summer bring a long leash as they are required. Always a favorite.
#3 San Diego’s Fiesta Island Dog Beach – after Sid’s retirement she enjoyed walking on Fiesta Island especially with her buddy, Maggie, Chris’ parent golden retriever. It a huge space dedicated to our four-legged friends that has the best views of Mission Bay and Downtown.
#4 El Segundo LAX Dog Park – a local favorite for Sid where the owners can watch the LAX planes take off
#5 Pismo Beach
– a favorite vacation spot for Sid. The entire town is dog friendly with camping and hotels welcoming dogs.
#6 Monterey Beach, CA – Sid hobbed nobbed with the down-to-earth dogs near the mansions and golf courses. Northern California is way more dog friendly than So-Cal.
Sidney also loved a run in her costume every Halloween.
Get off your butt and walk your dog! Feel free to comment on your favorite places.
